Hats off to the good people at Merge Records for sending along a Robert Pollard baseball card. I enjoyed collecting baseball cards in elementary and middle school, so it's nice to have one for the rock deity himself.

Given the Insound.com logo on the front, it appears to be one of a series of ten cards designed to celebrate musicians who, um, sell stuff at Insound.com.

But the card makes sense. Pollard has jumbo (rock) stats and an inclination towards sports (Fun Fact: Pollard starred in high school football and basketball, and pitched a no-hitter in college baseball). It's hard to think of a musical "icon" more deserving of a sports card.

The strong diagonal lines on the face of the card remind me of the 1986 Donruss set, which I've always liked. On the back, the card mentions the release of Normal Happiness, the indie rock titan's most recent LP (and fifth this year) and supplies a 10% off coupon code from Insound. Yippee.

It's also worth noting that Robert Pollard's official site is offering the new single as a free download. Is this baseball card rock?

This TV appearance is dedicated to anyone who's ever told me I should be a guest on The Maury Show. (Hi Mom!)



It was actually a lot of fun going to New York to tape this. Mr. Povich and his staff were nothing less than delightful professionals. But I think it's safe to say that this is probably the only Maury clip I'll post that doesn't involve a paternity test or an irrational fear of pickles.

Even though Kanye West is well known for his provocative statements, my money's on this whole thing being staged.
